coming up tonight..man shoots entire family and turns the gun on himself...details at 10

we hear stories like that and we just HAVE to watch...what compells us ? What is so interesting about death and destruction? We dont like it, so why are we so interested in hearing about it? Is there a such thing as an all good news channel? If so let me know I want to tune in...

I'm not sure if I'd say it's because of "bad" news, as just because of "unusual" news. We love to tune in to anything that's unusual, whether it's bad things like criminal activity & murder, or unusually good things that have to do with fame & fortune, like with Lifestyles of the RIch and Famous, etc.

Good news is inherently boring -- it leads nowhere. Bad news lets us project -- we can be thankful it's not us, or we can feel energized that "something must be done!" or we can feel sympathy and help the victim, etc. There are so many more stories that can come from bad news.

Can you imagine a the headline "Peace in the Middle-East" and someone (of a civilized bent -- I'm assuming we're talking about average people and not extremists of any stripe) saying "Oh my god! People aren't fighting! We have to do something!"

Bad news can spawn many more stories. Good news generally can't.

I think it reminds us that things are worse
for other people than our own lives, making our own a little more bearable.
