What's the name of this children book series (from the Late 80's & 90's)?

My sister and I are trying to think of a children book series we used to read. There were many different books and we destinctly remember one where the family went to the grocery store. She says the family was not human, they looked kinda like rats. I am positive it is not the Berenstain Bears, any other ideas?!?!

The Mercer Meyer books Caffeinated is thinking of are called the Little Critter books. That's the series that I thought of, too.

I think maybe they're hedgehogs or guinea pigs? Nutrias?

Richard Scarry wrote the books you are referring to. they did look like rats. they also had rabbits in some of them. they did some where they went to the grocery store as well as many other places in their town. It focused on a main family like the berenstain bears did but they do have alot more characters in them. they were also much taller and wider books then the average childrens book. Also still widely available to purchase or get from your library.

well, there were these books i loved when i was a kid by Richard Scary, called "Busy Town" There was a cat and he hung out with this worm, and a gorilla how loved bananas and all sorts of other animals.
