Tom = x
Bob = y
x = y/3
x + y = Total points (You are missing this from your text above)

2nd

x = Total workers
x/4 = 5
x = 20

[1]

t = Tom points b = Bob points

t = (1/3) * b

therefore b = t/(1/3)
b = 3 * t
Bob has three times more points than Tom

[2]

a = number of absent workers (a = 5)
t = total number of workers (t = ?)
p = the number of present workers (p = t - a)

a = (1/4) * t

therefore: t = a/(1/4)
t = 4 * a (and we know that a = 5)
so... t = 4 * 5
t = 20

p = t - a
p = 20 - 5
p = 15

[3] 7x+2x = (7+2)x = 9x

[4] 9y + y = (9+1)y = 10y

[5] I'm explaining as accurate as I can. You're welcome!

[6] z + 2z = (1+2)z = 3z

[7] E + E + 6 = (1+1)E + 6 = 2E + 6

Something is missing from the first problem. You need to know how many points either Bob or Tom has.

For the second problem, the equation would be 5 = 1/4x where x stands for the total number of workers. Solve the equation for x to get that there are 20 workers.

7x +2x = 9x
Adding variable expressions is just like counting items. Lets say that x stands for apples. So 7 apples plus 2 apples is 9 apples. Just make sure that your variables are the same; you can't add apples and oranges.

Try the rest now that you know the rule and write back if you're still confused

1/3 of x =the #of points Tom has x=# of points Bob has. so,x/3=1 x=3 let x=# of workers.equation:x/4=5, thus there are 20 workers(5x4) 7x+2x can be added cause they are like terms.thus7x+2x=9x same for 9y+1y which=10y also the same for the others.z+2z=3z and E+E+6=2E+6.

Bob has three times as many points as Tom. If Tom has p points then Bob has 3^P

5 workers =one quarter of all workers.Let total workers =w, then 5=w/4
thus w=5^4=20

7xylophones plus 2xylophones are 9xylophones. 7x+2x=9x

9y+y=10y

z+2z =3z
E+E+6=2E+6

The first problem is impossible to answer.**
----------
there are 20 workers.**

1/4 = 5/20

1 x 5 = 5
4 x 5 = 20
----------

7x + 2x = 9x**
7 + 2 = 9 (leave x as it is)
9 multiplied by x is the answer. (9x)

----------

9y**
