I see no reason that teachers' salaries shouldn't be increased. They just have to stop the bogus argument about certain states' teachers getting "X% below the national average." If those teachers' salaries go up, the national average goes up, and there is another whole group of teachers whose salaries are then "below the national average." Then if THOSE salaries are raised, it creates ANOTHER group of teachers whose salaries are .... you get the idea. There is a difference in salary and cost of living depending on location, so the national average argument is simply not logical.

Yes,everyone in every underpaid profession should be paid what they are worth and that would be directly related to how much they contribute to society. Teachers are a perfect example of those who are not compensated in accordance with their education and contribution. As in every profession, there are some teachers much better than others and this too should be acknowledged in the form of substantial increases in pay.

For certain.

I've had so many teachers who have worked their butts off for me (and encouraging me to become a teacher), that it kills me to hear them talk about their financial struggles.

Get this... one of my past teachers volunteered every weekend at a clinic to help with the mentally handicapped, and helped me work through everything dealing with my college info -- she was pretty much a mom to me. She had to give up her house (which had been in the family for years) and move into an apartment, and then sent her children away to live with their father because she couldn't provide for them and because the school cut her salary -- "music isn't as important as science". It was to us.

It's sad when celebrities are our heroes today, instead of our teachers and parents.

I'm with realprincess, they not only mold and teach our children but they babysit our sometimes bratty kids for up to 8 hr.daily!!! ****, if you don't wanna pay them for whatever dim view you have of teachers and their worth, pay them for babysitting services!!! Who else wants to spend 8 hrs a day in a classroom full of disrespectful brats! I say, spend less on defense and invest in our children's education instead. How about we spend the 8 billion dollars/month from the iraq war here at home for starters. That'll give us plenty of money for teacher's pay hikes and minimum wage increases as well.

Yes I think if they took a million dollars at least away from every damn professional athlete and actor/actress then it could be a lot better spent. It is absolutely insane how much these athletes, actors and actresses get paid. Don't get me wrong I like to watch t.v and games but they are way overpaid and teachers are way underpaid. Their salaries could definitely be put to better use.

Maisie.....most of us actually only end up with about 4-6 weeks off during the summer. Last year our school ended May 19th. On June 3rd to June 30th, I taught summer school for 4 weeks. Then I had to be back at school August 7th. So in reality I only had 6 weeks off. I think I would go crazy if I was actually off for 3 whole months!!

Absolutely not. They know going into teaching that it is not a very well paid job unless you coach on the side. The Teacher's Union, which protects bad teachers, must go away before rhis can happen. By the way, 3 months vacation a year is not to bad. When you average their pay by the amount they work, it isn't as bad as you would think. I know many teachers that supplement their income with summer jobs.

I wish salaries for teachers would be related to output. Good teachers get better salaries. Poor teachers, get the boot.

most definately not.
Teachers should get a raise according to their experience, knowledge, and how "good" of a teacher they are. The only way to find out if a teacher is a good one is to ask the students.
I agree there are teachers out there that deserve a huge paycheck, but there are also teachers that dont even deserve 4 figures
