What is wrong with my speedometer in my car?

I have an 89' GMC jimmy 4x4, and the speedometer doesnt work, nothing comes on except for the mileage i travel and the engine light occasionally, i have to keep track of how much gas i got by the mileage, everytime i fill the truck up i fill it up again when i reach 200 miles then i reset it..... Sometimes the speedometer comes on like once a month for only like 30 minutes then it shuts off again.... Whats the problem and how much will it cost to get it fixed.. I appreciate an answer

i have no alarm in it but i do have a cd player that was put in atleast 5 years ago, but it works great still....

it could be a blown fuse. that happened in my car. it happens a lot when you add anything electrical to the car like an alarm.

89 with a digital dash?
replace the dash. with a rebuilt unit available thru GMC or Chevy dealer or an authorized acdelco service center
