and how long does he/she sleep? My son typically goes to bed around 9 and then gets up at 5 or 6 for a bottle then will go back to be for another hour or 2. He is 4 1/2 months old and I know I'm lucky that he sleeps that long. I feel like his bedtime is late but I don't want to be up at 3 am with him either.

He doesn't go to bed at exactly 9 every night, so he's definately not on a set schedule. It is usually later than most that I've heard. He did go to be tonight at 8 (which is kind of why I was asking) because he was really fussy. We'll see how he does tonight.

My 8 month old daughter goes to bed between 7-8 PM(depending on how the day went!). She then wakes up between 7-8:30 AM. She has a nap(for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours) two hours after she wakes up. Then has another nap (1 1/2 hrs) three hours after her afternoon bottle and feeding. She usually wakes up from the nap around 4-5 PM and then goes to bed between 7-8! But things were not like this a few months ago. She usually went to bed between 9-10 PM and woke between 7-8 AM and took three naps a day.
I understand how you may be scared to put him to bed earlier, afraid he may wake up early in the morning lol. I had the same fear not too long ago. But if you can brave it just for one night and see how it goes, you may be better off, who knows?! He may end up sleeping better and longer than he does now!
What always helped with my daughter at that age was giving her some cereal about an hour before her bedtime bottle. But if you are not giving cereal yet that is just fine too! Maybe he just isn't ready to go very long without eating yet. That may change soon!

My daughter does not have a set bedtime schedule. She sleeps as she wants during the day and up until I go to bed. Which is usually @11:30 pm. During that time she naps in her bouncy seat or pack and play. When I go to bed I put her in her crib. She then sleeps until usually at least 8:00 am. She is 11 months old. She is tube fed continously all night so she doesn't get hungry and wake up. I usually change her once during the night, but she only grumbles at me and goes back to sleep.

At 4 1/2 months old, you are very lucky with his sleeping schedule. At his age you are still working with the ebb and flow of his wants and needs. My oldest at that age only slept about three hours at a time. If it's working for both of you,I say leave nature alone and keep up the good work! When he is old enough to comprehend a time-line (or throw tantrums) then you know he is old enough to have a set bedtime. Good luck when that day arrives. ;)

My son (eight months) has always gone to bed at 8:30. He sleeps right up until seven or sometimes even eight! I don't think his bed time is too late--if you do though move it up an hour--see how he reacts. My son has always been a great sleeper. I think finding a good bedtime is vital for mothers to get good rest. My friend moved her daughter's bed time up only an hour later and she slept all through the night! Experiment with it for a week. Find what works best for you and your son. Best of Luck!

with both my boys..(2&3 now)... i was done with the sleepless nights at about the same time as you 4 months.... ROUTINE is key, if you want night time to go well. I worked on a scedule with my boys, and it took about a week to enforce. 7pm-7am...(still woke up at about 4:30 for a bottle..for 2-3 more months) then a 9:30 am-10:30am nap....then a 1pm nap (usually a 1.5hour) and sometime a 4pm cat nap (20 mins...only for about 1-2 more months) and that was the routine.
up until this summer began, then slept from 7-7...with one afternoon nap..11-1. Now i have changed it up a bit. and they sleep from 7:30-7....with a 12pm nap till1:30. my first son kept the 2 naps for a year but my second one only stuck to 2 naps for about 6 months. Make it a routine now, and bed times will be bliss. The trick with bed time in being consistant...and dont budge on the routine. Start a routine that works for you now...andin a couple months you will be sleeping thru the night!!!!

my son gets his bath at 8pm and is put in his bed at 8:30 and will play by himself for like 30 mins and is sleeping by 9 usually and is up about 9:30am. Hes 11 months, but when he was that 4 months he was on my schedule. 9 isnt really that late but if you want him in bed eariler then start putting him to bed then. Its more important the he's on a schedult that suits you and him

My 11mth old son goes to bed between anywhere between 6:30 pm and 8pm. He generally sleeps until 7 or 8 am. You are very lucky to have a baby sleep that long at that age. Enjoy!
