You can check Borders stock online at http://www.bordersstores.com/index.jsp
But Barnes & Noble does not have a way to check online, you'll have to call the store.

You can look on the Internet for Barnes and Noble to see if a specific store has what you need. I don't know about Borders but I would guess they do the same to compete.

For Borders, go to http://www.bordersstores.com and click on the "Search Inventory" link. Before you can search the inventory, you'll need to Add Your Stores (just put in your city, state and a list of the nearest locations will come up). After you have a list of "My Stores," THEN you can search the inventory for all your stores.

Unfortunately, Barnes and Noble doesn't have this option on its website.

Call them. Both companies have been VERY helpful over the phone when I try to find books.

For either you can get the isbn of the book, call, and make someone look it up to see if it's in stock. On borders.com, i think you can order it for in-store pickup. they won't let you do that unless they have it.
