There is only one way to add power to an existing engine, add more fuel and air to get more combustion pressure on the power stroke of the engine.
There is only one easy way to do this, through the fuel, since the air is controlled in proportion to the fuel to achieve the proper ratio for the engine to work at all. So, your answer is a fuel additive which adds more to the combustion process to raise the pressure on the power stroke. Some might suggest a higher octane rating and yes, this will work to some extent, but will be minimal compared to the added cost of the higher octane rated gasoline. Next, you can supercharge the engine, with a supercharger of course, but again, the expense is big to add this kind of equipment. Sure, you can add something to the fuel which causes a higher combustion pressure which will increase the power output of the engine, but why spend the money for what might be said is a minimal return on investment?
The best thing you can do for an engine this old is simply keep the engine tuned properly, which means the engine will deliver the best it can do most of the time. Of course, you could go the nitrous-oxide route like drag racers do, and then you risk the possibility of blowing the engine completely...

Did you say a 1982 Corolla? Are you serious? If you have the 1.6 L engine, it puts out 120 HP (and that was when it was new). If it's the 1.4 it's struggling to reach 100 HP. The book value on the car in excellent condition is $500, tops. Are you sure you want to spend money on this car? I think you would be better off saving your dough for a while and buying something you can work with. But, that's just my opinion. If you really want to do something with what you've got, check out www.welovetoyotas.com and click on performance parts.

Horse power has been described in varying terms since its inception in 1782. A common measure for 1-horse power is 33,000 ft·lb per minute. This is the mechanical amount. See the following article for additional information.

Put in the correct octane of gas.... thats all I can think of. Changing the exaust system is easy and makes it sould better but that requires going under the hood. You could also use bolt ons, thats very easy. Otherwise there is no real way to see results without poping the hood.

a motor (engine) is nothing more than a big air pump so making it breath easier like a open element air breather will help and getting the engine to breath out the same way headers or a bigger exhaust will help also

NOS nitrous oxide gas is the cheapest way to go, and since you have an old beater, if you blow the engine up, you really didn't lose much. Furthermore, the NOS can be removed and put onto another car.
