There are several equations for Work:
W = F * d, where F is force, and d is displacement.
W = - integral of P dV, where P is pressure, and V is volume. This is used for thermodynamic work in Physics.
W = ΔEk, where Ek is the Kinetic Energy.

The unit is Joule (1 Newton-meter). If you push with a force of 1 Newton, and an object moves 1 meter, then you have done 1 Joule of work.

For mechanical work to be done, there must be a force applied, and there must be movement.
