It only gets you in trouble when what you did was wrong.

Telling the truth is always best, even when it involves hurting someone, you cannot always spare every ones feelings, living a lie is just hurting you worse everyday. As far as always getting you into trouble, it's what you did in the first place that got you in trouble, then trying to cover it up with a lie. This sounds like a case of cheating, am I right? You should not have cheated in the first place, then you would not have to worry about telling the truth and getting in trouble.

A person who tells the truth and is honest is the kind of person you like to make a friend of. Telling the truth is what helps to form the person you are and is someone you can put trust in. You will be a person of integrity something that is seen less and less today. Th bible says "the truth shall set you free", tell the truth and it will not come back and bite you. You say it always gets you in trouble, maybe it's not telling the truth that is getting you in trouble but a particular act. I encourage you to build a character that includes honesty, being truthful, thought full of others, loving and caring and not evil vindictive or uncaring. This will be the real you something you can be proud of and others will admire.

When you get older you will find, that lying can & will in some cases cost you your job. Ever boss I have ever had stuck with the same principal. "Tell me the truth even if I don't like it. At least I know the truth."
As a teen I learned it was easier to tell the truth & face the music than to lie & have the truth found out later. At that time the result was a lot worse. Most parents & employers will trust their children/employees alot more as long as they are confident you are telling the truth.
If your past has proved you to be a liar. It will take a very long time for anyone to trust you.

Because it's the moral and virtuous thing to do. Plus it only some times gets one in trouble. The rest of the time, it works in the truth teller's favor. It never hurts to occasionally throw in some exaggeration, unless it means deceiving a friend.

Do something bad and tell the truth = Punishment

Do something bad lie about it get caught = Worse punishment

If you deserve a punishment then you should probably just accept it. That's the only way you learn right from wrong.
