Alright, this probably sounds REALLY lame and I'll get a bunch of thumbs-downs, but watch a movie you KNOW really well, but with the subtitles on. You can get most languages now - Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish - if you know the movie, you'll know pretty much what they're saying.

Worked for me.

Best way i have found is total immersion, where possible go to a place or country where the language is spoken and communicate in only the language you are trying to learn, or if that is not possible find a local group or person that talks the language you want to learn and ask them to talk with you. It surprising how quickly you will learn key phases when you have no other way of saying them. I did it in France many years ago, soon moved away from the pointing and strange impressions to make myself understood to being able to ask for what i wanted in a simple but effective way.

i am teaching my bf Romanian but it is a pain in the butt since the grammar is hard. my best advice is to learn it in school and the to go and study abroad for the summer in the specific country that you are learning the language. having a good teacher that make you do a lot of conversations and does not base everything just on grammar is someone who you should look for and if you have a friend that speaks the language, practice it with your friend! practice makes perfect as well as reinforce what you are studying! rather that that i would say to take a class that is offered thru your school if you take a foreign lang. class somewhere like Mexico if you are taking Spanish and so forth sinc ethe first hand experience helps.

Having a tutor (or teacher if you're still in school) who pushes you through A LOT. Plus a lot of studying needs to be done if you really want to work on becoming fluent -- tapes are a lot of help, and videos in that language are great. I worked my butt off acing German V.

Going to the country also helps a lot, after you've gotten done the basics. Just to get a feel of how they speak everyday, instead of learning just textbook.

What language are you interested in taking?

living in a place where the language is spoken natively is the best way to learn. But if you don't have that opportunity... then a mix of everything is probably best. A teacher, books, communication with native speakers, and lots of practice!!
