you may also want to consider a rowing shell.......like the colleges use....a single scull weighs about 40 pounds and , with the sliding seat.....google search "Head of the Charles" for some great pictures..... does great things for thighs and backs.....there is also a slightly more robust version called the Alden Ocean Shell......Wooden Boat magazine has a number of builder adds for small lightweight sliding seat shells and boats.....

A kayak is probably your best bet. They are often very light, many as light as 30 or 35 pounds, and can easily be transported on the roof of a car, if a truck is not available. Look for one with a good back support. Like most things, there is a huge range in price, but you can get a basic plastic hulled one that would be good on calm waters for around $400.00. The other advantage to the plastic hull is they are pretty much maintainance free, and can even be dragged to the water if neccessary, though I would avoid that on pavement.
A canoe offers many of the same advantages, but they are typically much longer, making them unwieldy by yourself. Of course the advantage is someone else can join you in a canoe!

I would suggest a kayak. They come from 13 pounds to 100. The longer the better for gliding on the water. Prices go up as weight goes down. The longer ones go on top of the car easier. There are places where yo can rent or try out a kayak bfore buying. Kayaks can slide on the grass too without damage.

First off, I say congratulations on 38% rating on your best answers. Wow!
About the rowboat, I ask if it is possible to leave it by the river. Could you buy an old aluminum or fiberglass canoe and wrap a large bike chain around its cross brace and a tree? This way you would only have to bring along a key on the day you want to row. I have seen this type of thing before. Just my 2¢ .

Their are also many inflatable models available. Go to a large out door store... (IE. Cabala's or Bass Pro Shop) You will find many models which would be perfect for you.

Kayak would be ideal. Go for one made by Clipper, as these are one of the best!
