My service engine soon light has been on and off since february. I have taken it to the dealership, autozone, and my mechanic and they all say the computer is reading bad O2 sensors and catalytic converter. They have all been replaced three times, but the light still comes on. I have been told that the light coming on is a common problem in 02 and 03 grand ams and gran prix's. Is there any way to get the light off, or any idea of what could be causing this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The PCM uses the front oxygen sensors for fuel control, and uses the rear sensor (the one behind the cat) as a monitor to determine the efficiency of the cat.
If the PCM "sees" the rear sensor read a "mirror" of the front sensor(s), it determines there is a fault or failure with the Catalytic Converter.
Merely replacing the sensors because you got a code that indicated a fault is like punishing someone for telling the truth without verifying the story.
When these codes are present, it is wise (and legally required in some states) to test the sensors, the PCM logic, and the wiring, to validate the information that the sensors and PCM are dealing with. If the sensors and electronic system prove within normal parameters, the Catalytic Converter must be tested. If the cat cannot handle the emissions within acceptable limits anymore, the sensors are going to say so, and you will get a MIL illumination.
Take your car back to your mechanic or to the dealer, and see to it that the WHOLE system be diagnosed as a WHOLE system rather than just throwing parts at it.

Good Luck

I have a 99 Grand Am and my car does the same thin. My light has been on for about 6 months. I went and got it checked but i was told that absolutely nothing was wrong with my car. It was probably a sensor problem but it was nothing major that i should worry about. I suggest you go get it checked out just in case. You'll never know. It could be something serious!

It could be a wiring problem thats connected to the sensors. It's also possible the wiring may have melted and 'grinded out'. Have someone check the wiring harnass or the connectors.
