Soak some cotton balls with drops of peppermint essential oil, it absorbs the bad smell. It really works!

I originally was going to answer to stop pulling your husband's finger when he asked, to stop the smell.
Food is another thing. Get rid of the source of the burn. The burnt material stinks the worst. Take it outside and also wash the pan. You likely have to wah the stove, the hood and the filters with a pleasant detergent. If really bad, you may have to wash walls and cabinets as if a house fire had occurred. See the hardware store for agents to do this. Painting walls with"Kilz" paint is the last resort.

Get the scented candles out and start burning them. That should help mask some of the odor.
Depending on how bad the smell is, you may have to wipe down the cabinets with vinager and water to get the smoke smell off.
Good luck!

This works for paint so I guess it may help with your problem. Put a bucket of water in the room and put 2 onions cut in half in the water. Somehow it actually draws the smell from the air.

Clean all surfaces, walls, ceiling, counters, cabinets, floor, behind fridge and stove. That is where the smell is. Don't try to cover it up, it will come back, clean it up. Sounds like alot but this is what is required.

Open the windows, turn on the vent fan, soak the pot of burnt food in the sink, strain the charred remains through a colander, take it out with the garbage, wash the pan, close windows.
Smell will disappear with time.

Leave bowls of cleaning amonia around the house for the day, the odors should be reduced when you come home, and dump the amonia down the drain. Great in close-up teenagers' bedrooms, too.
