You didn't say why you think they are bad. If it's the magic, you need a better education in what is and isn't true. All the spells in Harry Potter are slightly corrupted Latin. None of them work.

If it's the content, I wonder if you've read them. The basic story, which is very well written, is the usual conflict between good and evil. The major characters are well rounded and believable. In the early books, the boys acted like boys and didn't ask for help. In the later books, they've stayed true to their age.

The only fault I can find with the books is the editing. Because J. K. Rowling is guaranteed a best seller no matter what, the editing has been sloppy and unneeded scenes have not been cut. This is as much the fault of the publisher as it is hers.

It's all right for me to read and enjoy Books 1, 2 and 3. But I'm sorry I lost my interest and decided not to read Book 4 or any other sequel. Reading good contemporary classics is more challenging and worth spending your precious time, in brief, you should get something there more from a literary fashion in the name of children literature (?). I've no idea what'd happen with this Potter series 100 years from now.

I love the Harry Potter series, It is well written fiction, and an engrossing story. I will read them all to my new son when he is old enough to ask questions about what he is hearing.

I think that ANYTHING that can get a child to put down the t.v. remote is a good thing.

As far as the religious "conservatives" go, I have to agree, It is fiction, it is a story, and should be taken as such as it was intended.
What I don't understand from the "conservatives" is the argument about "witches" and "evil".
Don't we see enough evil in the day to day life we now lead?

When we seriously have to consider teaching our children self-defense, in case of an intruder at school, How much more "evil" is left?

I think they are wonderful! Books that will have children and their parents waiting at the bookstore at midnight to buy are all right with me. I will have to agree with wi_saint, if a Harry Potter book can make a child turn away from the t.v., what could be wrong with that?

I personally thought it was better when I was younger and still into to it more after a while you lose your harry potter pep. It's okay thought espeacially if you like goood books. It's not satanic or anyhting either, just a lady with an imagination writing.

I think that the books are a great series. It's not bad. Those people who says it's bad it just looking for something to have a conflict about. I read on the net that this mother was trying to ban them from libraries and surrounding schools. Really Dumb!!!

I think it's great! There's nothing wrong with it at all, as long as you (or your kids) can distinguish fiction from non fiction. I was taught the difference when I was very young, as were most children and adults that I know who love the series. For the record, I'm not some 15 year old blowing steam...I'm 26.
