Would having a broken trim gauge on a boat cause it to malfunction? Or will the boat run fine without it ? How would i go about replacing it ?

Trim refers to the lean a boat has in the water, due to the weight of the occupants or items. The gauge shows how far off level the boat is, so that you can make adjustments to the trim tabs. If the boat isn't level it will not go in a straight line. Plus it's nicer to walk around on a level deck, safer too.

Trim Gauge

All it does is give you an idea where your Engine (Lower Unit) is trimmed to. It really not affect performance, unless you not trim for performance depending on the gauge. When I had an outboard I just look back at the engine to see where it tilted, experience. An Inboard you can not see. What you can do if the Gauge not working. Lower the Trim all the way, this tucks it to take off and plane out. As the bow begins to lower into the plane I start to raise my trim a little. Once your planed raise the trim until the boat Porpoise (Get Squirrelly) or you hear the Prop Cavetate (spelling?) (Suck air) you will know as RPMs take off. Then lower back down a little and you good to go.

The trim gauge tells you the position of your outboard motor or drive. Depending on the boat, this can be quite pertinent or completely irrelevant. The boat should run fine without it. Replacement kits are usually available from the manufacturer. The shipping will cost more than the parts.

Is it manual or automatic? If it is manual it will not effect it. Trim gauges tell if the boat is in trim or if the trim tabs are properly adjusted. Can you tell if you are in trim? Boat may run but not as efficiently as if it were in trim.
