women ovulate 14 days before the last day of your cycle. If your cycle is 28 days you ovulate on day 14 starting with the first day of menstral flow. If your cycle is longer like 33 days the you ovulate on day 19. There is no way to determine gene selection the science is that femal sperm live longer than male sperm,but male sperm swim faster and get there first. For a male have sex less frequent and one or right after ovulation. For female have sex more frequently and days before ovulation.

despite what you have heard there is no way to determine the sex of a baby. the best time to concieve is when you are most fertile which is different for all women. but it is most typically in between days 12 and 16 of your cycle

You need to find your ovulation time;
The only way for you to know if you are ovulating is to take your basal body temp each morn, same time and before you get up. You should see a pattern in temps that leads up to and after ovulation. You can get the basal thermometer at Wal-Mart for about 8 dollars. I use a wonderful FREE website called Fertilityfriend.com...it graphs your temps for you, keeps track of your fertility signs, tells you when you ovulate and also tells you if there is an implantation dip in your temps. You can also use Ovulation prediction kits, but they only measure your LH surge and give you a ball park time for ovulation...they do not pin point it. Oh, and it is possible to be ovulating while you do not have your period, just like it is possible to have a period and not ovulate.
As for the gender selection method...it is called "The Shettles Method". Here is a link for you:

Count out three years after you get married. If it looks like you're really, really going to stay together, and you've talked it over a lot and both really, really want a child, that'd be the perfect time to conceive. And it'll be a lot more reliable than ovulation thermometers for getting the right results.

You can only conceive during ovulation. Go to a pregnancy website and chart your menstrual periods for free and it will calculate the days you are most fertile. My husband and I tried this and after two months, we were pregnant! Good luck!
