It's not much water that comes up, and it is always just "gray water." It only happens when we run the clothes washer during the wash and rinse cycles. After about 15-20 seconds of gurgling and water backing up, it all quickly goes back down the drain. Nothing else causes this problem. Any theories?

I agree with the other guys/gals its sounds like a partially clogged drain.

but you didn't say if this always happened or if its a new problem. If its a new problem then its a partially clogged drain. If it always happened then it may be you need a vent pipe after the trap from the washing machine. The vent allows trapped air to escape from in front of the draining water allowing the water to flow faster. If there is no place for the air to vent the water may drain slower and gurgle.

Good luck

If the washer was working ok at your aunt`s house , you probably just need to raise the drain hose up so that its at least the same height as the main top of the washer before it curves back down to the floor drain . Either that , or put the drain hose into a standpipe that`s as high as the top of the washer .

You need to think about where that dirty water is backing up... Perhaps when the water empties from the washer it is moving faster than the drain will allow. This could be caused by a partially blocked drain or one that's not properly ventilated. If it really bothers you - call a plumber...

Sounds like your drain pipe is slowly getting clogged up. The gugling is similar to a slow drainpipe in your sink which slowly "gurgles" its way down.

I would suggest two solutions:

1)Unglogg the drain with a drain "snake" which you can buy cheaply in a hardware store.

2)And finally, add a nylon stocking (about 6 to 8 inches in size) to the end of your hose with a rubber band. It will catch most of the lint and you can empty it or replace it periodically.

Ok, like as not a blockage or partial blockage. Go to walmart, get a 2 or 3 lb bag of washing soda , throw the lot in, do a hot wash. This will clean the washer (all that soap fat) and with a bit of luck, the drains as well....hot soda does wonders to grease.

Kinda sounds like you have some blockage in the drian. The best thing is to get a lint filter for the drian hose from the washer. I would try to use some drain cleaner and remove some of the lint that has been stuck in the drain....

Build up in sewer line coming off the washing machine, or a clog in the vent line for this sewer line. Need to run a snake down it to clear either of these clogs out.

Your drains are getting plugged. You need to clean them out. You can rent a drain snake (aobut $20) and do it yourself, or you can pay a plumber about $200 bucks.
