I am 5'6", 195 lbs. I never played organized football but I play pick-up tackle games all the time. The greatest asset I believe me and you both possess is our height. We are so short that people have to get real low to tackle us. My advice to you is to definitely work on your leg power. Do squats and leg press mainly. After that I would focus on shoulder strength (for stiff-arming) and back strength (to drag folks when you are trying to break tackles).
Here are some of my specs (for reps, not max):
Bench-285lbs
Leg Press- 900lbs
deadlift-365lbs
shrugs- 225lbs
You can do it, just gotta be focused. good luck

How can I be a better running back?
I am a Jr. in Highschool.
I am probably the smallest varsity football player ever.
I lift as much as most of the guys.
I ran the 40's in 4.6 sec.
However, I get tackled very easily.
I'm 125 lbs, 5' 6".
Over the offseason, I am going to work out like crazy and hope to become...

5'6" is a good height, but you could try to add about 50 pounds or so in muscle. And try to work on your tackling. Don't just get hit and accept it. Try to wiggle free while keeping the ball safe. It might also help to watch football (both pro and college) to see how running backs wiggle free of tackles. Fight for every yard. Drag tacklers to gain that yard and run with your eyes. Look for open areas and watch for would-be tacklers.

Alot of the answers are great except one thing. No one talked about balance. I am NOT being funny. Take a ballet class. It will teach you balance and quickness on your feet. It was one of the great secrets of the Champion Dallas Cowboys in the 70s

the most important thing is to hold on to the ball, keep your legs pumping...pump them high and hard, almost exageratingly high...pump pump and don't stop...you'll be suprised at how many talkes you shake..
