Very nice of you.

PS If youve got time and effort you may be able to get TV or radio airtime.

Have a wacky contest. The Radio or TV people may be willing to help with some sort of prize.

Also consider talking to local successful small business owners.

Post an ad on Craigslist. Offer to pickup the items on one day -- that way you could rent a U-Haul and pick up a truck full in one day while keeping the cost down. You can ask churches if you may post a sign over a huge cardboard box, for soliciting donations for your cause. You can ask neighbors and people you work with for donations. Having something in writing is helpful -- it serves as a reminder to donors and it shows that you are organized. Let people know exactly who their donation will benefit. Contact churches who are having rummage sales. They would be happy for you to pick up their leftovers!
