Also, should I just get a whole new custom PC alltogether? Right now, I have a $600 dollar budget and rising. Also, I don't have much experience installing PC parts, so that might be another cost. So, should I get a whole new PC, or upgrade the parts one by one?

upgrade the parts, one by one.

start out by replacing the mother board...then get a larger hard drive (30 gigs or larger). get more memory...and if money can allow...get a faster processor (2.66 gig is fine...but you can get a faster one like an AMD or even a dual core chip...if you want)...

As much fun as upgrading or building is, you just can't do it for $600. I agree with your first two respondents, although they omitted an expensive component you'd need, namely a new much beefier power supply. In practice, about the only stuff you have that you'd end up keeping is your case, keyboard, and monitor.

With Windows Vista out soon, you'll undoubtedly want to have that, and in order to run its Vista Aero gui, you need real horsepower in the video card. You could end up spending almost $300 just for that.

There are tremendous sales on computers now at office supply places. Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Gateway and Dell are selling stuff cheap. Be careful here though because those cheapies come with Windows XP and almost certainly cannot run Vista Aero. If I were you, I'd wait until January and machines with Vista are out.

By the time you get a new motherboard and new processor, then figure you will add in a new video and sound card not to mention a new hard drive for more space. Then buy new version of windows for the system.

You are better off just buying a new computer. Motherboard and processor alone will be almost this price.

First thing to upgrade is the Motherboard. All other hardward upgrades depend on the motherboard. But by the time you get everything, you might as well buy a brand new computer.
