Ten weary footsore travellers
all in a woeful plight.
Sought shelter in a wayside inn
on a dark and stormy night.

Nine rooms, no more, the landlord said
have I to offer you.
For each of eight a single bed
but the ninth must serve for two.

A din arose, the troubled host
could only scratch his head.
For amongst those footsore travellers
no two would share one bed.

The troubled host was soon at ease
he was a clever man.
And to please all ten men
he devised this most ingenious plan.

In room marked “A” two men he placed
the third he put in “B”
The fourth in “C” he tucked away
the fifth retired to “D”

In “E” and “F” the sixth and seventh
and in “G” the eighth man.
In “H” the ninth he tucked away
and then to “A” he ran.

Wherein as I have said
he’d laid two travellers by.
Taking one, the tenth and last
he lodged him safe in “I”

Nine rooms, a room for each
was made to serve for ten.
And this it is that’s bothered me
and many wiser men.

If we reflect on what he's done,
We'll see we're not insane,
Two men in A ,he's counted one,
Not once --- but once again!

To me it looks that the Host is weak in arithmatics and one of th 10 weary men should have fallen asllep somewhere in the passge between rooms H and I .

I can ad that in the eastern part of the world a silmilar philosophical question has been around for 5000 years, That is about the teacher and his ten disciples. When counting the number the disciple swere always leaving out themselves. The moral of the story, there, was that we always forgetourselves

not much of a riddle:
Why did the 2 boys go into room "A" together if they had agreed beforehand not to share a room/ bed?
And what happened to the tenth traveller?

The first Traveller and the tenth Traveller are the same person.

There are only nine men, one in each of nine rooms.

You've counted the same man twice, in A and I. There are only nine men in nine rooms.

first of all what is the # 10........is it not 1 & 0........9 is the last # in the # system. 10 is a new beginning for the #'s 1 & 0. ......the #'s had run teir course and end, only to be reborn and run again, but this time thy joined hands with another #.......we see that the #'s must have been lonely..when they realized that life could not be complete alone, they gathered hands to be complete.......it is becoming unselfish, sharing thine posessions with another, and not only that but becoming something new, for you have now changed what you where when you take another unto you, you are no longer 1, but are 2 known as 1. mr. & mrs. wilhite are one family, they are no longer two..............so when the host took the 10th man unto himself they where one, and one only needs one room. mr. & mrs. wilhite would not have it any other way, they are one and always will be. one room for one body.......as jesus said.. and thy flesh be as one. no longer being seperate........oh how wonderfull it is to be one from two

"Self" deceptive .. it was !
It was either the FIRST or the Second (who were in room "A")
who was re-allocated into the nineth room "I" ...!
Call him by the name Tenth, if you like, like the landlord...!
