its not dead if its moving around and showing up in different spots. sometimes snails wont move for a long time, but that doesnt mean they are dead either. A dead snail wont close up in its shell, and may even fall out. it will start smelling really bad if its dead.

Its probably not dead. Some snails appear to be dead when they're really not. If the shell has a strange color, maybe its dead. Don't poke it or anything, but if its a land snail, yeah, maybe wet it a little. You feed the snail, right? Well, feed it and if the food is still there, maybe. If it doesn't come out, look frequently at the snail so see if it comes out. If it doesn't, go see the vet or something.

I have 3 Apple snails they are about the size of your fist I have kept them alive for 6 years and they are thriving. Snails live on algae. You can buy algae tablets at the pet store. I hope your snail isn't dead but if it is it is best to get it out of the tank asap so that it does not pollute the tank and so the fist don't try to eat it.

Pick your snail up and touch the bottom (where he come out) if he don't pull in then he probably is dead. One other thing you could do is take him out of the water and watch him for awhile. Snail can live out of the water for a few days.

If it is dead it would not be closing its shell. Leave it alone.
