Why is it so wrong to say the word fat?

Fat, when used in reference to a person, has ALWAYS been an insult. Calling someone fat is like calling them ugly. If you call them, say, curvy, it's not nearly as bad or hurtful. But, basic politeness should not let you refer to anybody by weight at all.

It's what you are describing by calling something fat. A big fat hen is alright. Don't eat meat with fat on it, is all right. Too look at a person and say, "You are fat", is rude and unkind. Anyone who is overweight certainly knows it so no one has to tell them they are fat.

Not where I live. I call my friends fat, fatty, fat kid etc., it's like calling them dude or man. I don't say it to people that are fat though. I don't know why. I guess it's 'cause I don't want to hurt there feelings. I don't say it to insult them. Like how when someone out does someone else, they out done person might say "You suck, you fat kid!" or something like that. But that's just where I live. But my friends mom doesn't allow my friend to say "fat" or "suck". Parents are too sensitive these days. Well, whatever.

For the same reason it's bad to say "idiot" or "moron" Lord knows it describes like half the population, but idiots and morons don't seem to be too happy about being reminded that they are idiots and morons.
But they don't seem to realize that they're morons and idiots until you point it out to them...there they are, going along all nice and you have to point out that they are unbelieveably stupid.
Fat people are the same - they convince themselves that they are normal until someone points out the obvious to them and they have little breakdowns...

its not anymore. a majority of people are becoming/are obese. however some people are offended when they are called fat. this might be why it is seen as bad....i think the word obese is worst though.

I which people tried to let people know that it is unhealthy to be fat and remind them of it every day like they do smokers.
People won't do that because it is hurtfull (like bitching at people for smoking isn't")
