Dig down about 3 inches for the path. fill with one inch of sand and smooth out. lay bricks and tap lightly with a piece of 2 by 4 to set, add or take away sand as needed. You can put sand or concrete between the bricks if there are spaces.

It depends on how long you want it to last. If you are building for a lifetime her is how: Dig down at least 8" pour a base 4" thick of gravel base (ask at the hardware store they will know what you need). Next compact this very well. It is best to use a power compactor but if not an option for $15 you can buy a hand tamper. Try to get your gravel as level as you can. The next layer is 2" of sand this does not get compacted just lay it on thick and using a board as wide as your walk way scrape the extra sand off leaving a flat smooth surface to place your bricks. Make sure to use a plastic edger to keep your bricks lined up on the edge. The last step it to broom locking sand over the finished walk this will fill all the gaps and prevent any movement. Just like a good cake if you don't have a good base the rest will collapse. This is not the easiest or cheapest method just the best one.
