They usually sleep pretty well. They are making sure that the accused gets representation & isn't railroaded. They are defending the concept that the accused is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. There are cases that will bother them (both people convicted who they feel shouldn't have been & those who are acquitted on a technicality even though they likely committed the crime). The justice system has decided that it is better to set a criminal free if there isn't sufficient proof than to incarcerate a person who is not a criminal -that's why we have "innocent until proven guilty". Remorse generally isn't applicable -the attorneys aren't the ones who have committed a crime & they aren't the ones who ultimately decide the fate of the accused, they just do their best to see that the client isn't wrongly convicted.

it is just their job, until this country goes back to martial law, everyone is entitled to a defense, innocent until proven guilty. Either this is the United States of America, or it isn't. Who is going to decide who is entitled to a defense and who isn't; there are countries where people live like that, it sure as hell isn't for me.

They sleep fine.
They are not there to make things up. They are there to tell things the way their client wants them to tell things as long as they do not know for certain that the client is lying under oath.

I know what you're saying, but you have to remember, that a person is innocent until proven guilty. It's a lawyer's job to defend that person.

that's why sharks don't eat lawyers (professional courtesy),
but sharks never sleep, they rest,
and they must keep swimming or they will sink to the bottom.
maybe those lawyers don't sleep either?
the only defense would be if the rapist was certified insane..
