Asphyxiation!
Raising the arms above the level of the neck for extended periods of time causes the lungs to collapse. Keeping the arms raised by forcibly holding them in place on crucifix arms will do the trick. Air cannot be taken in to the lungs, so the person dies of lack of oxygen.

If you went by wounds, it would have probably been drowning from the sword to the side pucturing the lungs and allowing blood to enter the lungs slowly until they filled up and his heart stopped beating.

From what I understand, it was probably a combination of blood loss, suffocation, and heat stroke.

i believe it was heart failure, but asphyxiation played a big part in it as well.
