Yep, that was my guess. It is really dark in there sometimes. You have all those spiders and little crawly things. And then, if its a ways from the house it can be a bit unnerving. Been there, done that. Always an adventure it was. Then you'd have to move the out house after digging a new hole and fill in the old one when that spot got full.

And, the cold draft that came up the hole during the winter...I saw where they had the same problem in the castles. They had bathrooms (?) built into the side of the castles, usually higher up than where the common folk slept, worked and toiled, quite a breeze. Too bad if you happened to walk underneth of that when you were outside. lol, lol

I was raised on a farm, and had to use "outdoor" plumbing for 21 years, and never had a "Crescent Moon" opening on the door...Not a half moon FYI.

Ours was affectionately called "Church" and had a decent handle,,,but it's possible that the "opening" could have been used to close the door in the absense of even a lenght of rope.
