I want a small pet and I find little itty-bitty tiny-teeny turtles to be very cute. But do they require a lot of care? I'm gone most of the day.

"Itty bitty teeny tiny turtles" are baby Red-ear sliders which grow up to about 10" long and require about $100 in set-up costs.

The sad thing is that they are sold cheap, and everyone is being told that they are easy, carefree pets.

If you raise them the 'easy way'- small bowl, turtle flake food, etc., they will not grow in size and will usually die in about 4 months- rather than the 20-40 years it should live!

Turtles are interesting pets, I own two myself. Raised both from little bitty turtles. Once you get the tank set up and filtered they are fairly self sufficient. You must feed them and clean the tank of course. Now the question is, is the turtle you are looking at a water turtle or land turtle? They need different types of care. What care questions do you have specifically? You will need a UVA/B light no matter which kind of turtle you get though.

No they are actually eaier than bigger turtles. I have a small painted turtle (about 3 in). Just turn on the heat lamp, and UV lamp feed him, then turn it off at nite. If it is aquatic, you will need a filter, so you don't have to constantly change the water. I've had my turtle for four yrs and he hasn't grown very much, still looks like a baby. He's so cute.

They are easy to care for, but hard to buy. Some states will not allow you to purchase the small ones unless you are a teacher and the pet is for your classroom. If you manage to buy a turtle it would be fine while you are away all day.
