2nd hand stores, flea markets, and yard sales for most items. Don't get the "stupid" items like changing tables that don't get used. Save your money for a good but cheaper crib new and a good but cheaper car seat, everything else can be hand-me downs, and honestly they run out of usefulness so quickly, don't worry about not buying everything new.

fortunately for you at least you have hope. try putting down on youre expenses saving each penny you can. since your BF is in a degree, he will start earning sooner or later , until then you have to put up with the situation. if you are less than 5 months pregnant then you can work part time also. a job like a stenographer or sedentary work can be done even uptill 7-8th month of pregnancy. this will give you money which you can spend on your baby later.

PSSS! next time go for a baby when you are well settled. this sort of thing which you are saying happened with my parents too. my sister was born in a cash-strapped environment but by my time they had well put everything into place.

There are charities that provide free or low-cost baby goods for low-income mothers. Check your phone book or call local churches. Ask your OB/GYN if they know of any places.

If there are any upscale subdivisions in your town, check with their offices. Sometimes they have community yard sales and you can get used baby stuff in very good condition for not much money because people just want to get rid of it. Check consignment shops and read the newspaper or free community flyer where people may list baby items for sale. If any understanding friend or relative hosts a baby shower for you, you may get many nice items as gifts.

Don't forget WIC, food stamps, and whatever else you are eligible for.

Love is the most important thing for a child. S/he will remember that much longer than a new crib or high chair.

Dont be worried...
Listen, I am a mother of THREE almost -
i have a 19 month old, a 3 year old and I just found out I have another one on the way!!!
There are services out there that will help you - food stamps, insurance, WIC, etc...if you DONT make enough, they will help you...
second, why are you looking through the catalog? You can find what you need at your local Walmart for crying out loud! LOL Also, remember NAME BRAND for a baby is ridiculous!!! The babies grow so so so so fast - dont waste your money on that.
You will be fine...just be wise with your money...and realize that I have almost 3 kids now and a husband, and we make only 800 every two weeks striving like that...its not all about money - its about family and what we make out of it :) You will do fine!

Actually, they are not expensive at all. Check with family and friends to find out if they have any of the bigger items you will need, or check charity shops and Salvation Army. To save money, use cloth diapers - disposables are a HUGE expense. If you breastfeed, there goes the huge cost of formula. Sleepers and blankets, etc. are not expensive at all - you'll get some at your baby shower.
If you and your husband work out a budget and quit the extras, you should have no problem at all. Many of us have done it well, and have happy, healthy babies. It just takes not being selfish and for the two of you to make lots of sacrifices - and they are all worth it.

Garage Sales are your best bet. You can find great barely used stuff for a fraction of the price. It also helps to buy things out of season on sale in a bigger size for the next year. You may be able to find summer stuff right now that you could buy for next year.

Get involved in a parent or play group this is a great way to network with other parents and swap stuff among each other. Hope this Helps:)

Garage sales are really great.... especially for clothes since children grow out of them so fast. You'd also be surprised how much stuff you can find at thrift stores like Goodwill, Salvation Army, Villiage Discount Outlet, etc. The best of luck to you!

Don't buy things from a cataloge. Go to your local thrift store (this also supports charity when you buy there) you can get nice things cheap. Go to your local department store and get things on clearance or on sale.

Go get assistance from WIC for formula and such......babies don't need 50 dollar shoes they will out grow them in a month. they don't need baby gap or old navy clothes, they will just spit up on them and pee and poo on them.

You can be a good parent and teach your child the value of a dollar by not spoiling him/her on un-needed things that make it look like you have more money than you do.

(but you can get the name brand expensive stuff at thrift stores too for like near nothing)

I don't intend on sounding like I am trying to say you won't be a good parent. that just came out a bit backwards. I grew up on thrift stores and so do my children. I have two and they are very young, and it is a struggle at times, but when you see that smile on their face it makes it all worthwhile.

my children are perfectly content to go "shopping" and not buy a thing. I very rarely buy them new things as far as clothes except on special occasions such as a birthday or Christmas.

good luck and I hope you have a happy healthy baby!!!

Yes, raising a baby is expensive. Money buys nicer thing but Love will make your baby a better person. Prioritize your needs and stick to a budget. You can do it. There are many groups that will help you out.

Good luck!

The best thing i ever did when i had my kids was visit the thrift shops. They now have places in most cities that take gently used baby items and resell them for less. It really helped. You can find lots of nice stuff in those stores because lots of babies dont ever wear all their clothes before they outgrow them. Don't go overboard is the best suggestion i can give.
