I HATE Norton AV - but Norton GHOST is pretty awesome. I have at least 5 backups of my hard drive - .... just in case..... Not that expensive - look on e-bay.
Also, Windows XP has a "Restore" feature but I only use it if I realize it just screwed up.... Restore is best when it's used within 24-48 hours..... GHOST is for when nothing else works and brings you back to the last time you ghosted.... the new version does incremental backups.... if you choose.

maybe if the pc came with nero or sonic...open that and go through it...i know some of them have a back up utility program...i know nero 7.2 does....if it is a compaq presario..try..start.a;; prpgrams..pc help and tools...cd/dvd creator..that will make u a back up
