well perimeter is how far around the shape so 2 times the length(length is how tall like vertical) +2 times (width is how long like horizontal)= perimeter
say the perimeter is 18 inches
and the length is 6 in

6in.*2+in.w*2= 18in
6 * 2= 12
18-12= 6
6divided by 2( do the opposite of multiply by 2)=3

6in*2+3in*2=18
width= 3 in.
