I developed A shopping book with removable pictures of products they sell in a grocery store for my adult boarder. He can’t read or write well enough to make a shopping list. This book has helped him go grocery shopping without any assistance. I was thinking of putting it on the market to sell to other people that can’t read. Before I do I need to know if there is a demand for a picture-shopping book? Does anyone know how to find out?

No, and in fact all you would be doing is fostering a person's inability to read. Even people with Dyslexia can learn to read.

Our country has done nothing but produce illiterate people for the last 20 years. We've got kids who have grown into adults who can't spell worth a damn because all they were ever taught was Hooked On Phonics.

Don't make it worse. If you really want to help him, teach him how to read. Don't enable him.

Our Entire nation is full of people with an average reading level of 3rd grade. A full grown adult can learn to read at that level with some practice.

I know you meant well, but sometimes you have to ask yourself if by helping a person are you REALLY helping them or are you handicapping them further.

YES, there is a demand, but the consumers of these visual aides are usually dependent upon Special Ed teachers and workers who assist them in their daily life to make hand made versions of this type of product because of the limited $$resources available to most disable persons.

Where there is better funded support there are some prepublished or commercial products in use. People with the inability to speak make use of COMMUNICATION BOARDS on a daily basis. Some boards contain pictures with or without words and other boards have words only. There are now computer programmable keyboards which actually have a voice synthesizer and "speak" words and programmed phrases for the user.

A version of your book could be used by adults with special needs and even persons suffering from altzheimers (sp?). I would encourage you to consider a computer version which would allow users to "click" the item and have a list printed - this would be for users who cannot turn pages of a book due to lack of fine motor skills.

Contact: United Cerebral Palsy, and look up other organization that assist people with special needs including Sheltered Workshop programs, Adult Special education, etc

ASK about other non-profit orgs - they could help you find publishers who specialize in this field.

Yes. I have been in the field 27 years and I can tell you there are many people who need and use picture communication not only to communicate but to learn to read. Some use only pictures, some use varying types of sophisticated voice-output boards.

Brain injured/trauma, autistic, paralyzed,cerebral palsy, mentally impaired, deaf, aphasic and I'm sure I have forgotten some others!

Most of us started out making our own materials, as you have, but more and more I see there are commercial pictures and Icons available. There are even ways to write using picture communication systems-all in symbols!

Mayer-Johnson makes a CD where you can type what you want and it pops up pictures with a voice output, "Writing with Symbols" There's tons of stuff out there, all very expensive, but people are always looking for newer and better.

I myself am always looking for better picture DICTIONARIES! I found a Chinese one that has English in it and a picture of everything-its about 4 inches thick- wish it was on CD so I could cut and paste!

You must be a creative and inovative person so I'm sure you can search under all those "labels" and see what materials publishers already have . If yours is different or unique, I'm sure you will be able to sell them. I'll start compiling a list for you as I am always searching this stufftoo!

I would contact companies such as Able-Net, Mayer Johnson, Super Duper and Lingua-systems. This is a great product. I create things like this all the time for clients I work with, but I always look to buy products like these because they are such time-savers! If these companies are interested they will usually offer you either a flat rate to buy your idea or a percentage per item you sell. Good luck-your creation will surely help others!

Hi there;

IMHO there sure is a demand for what you have just described and before you go any further you need to copy write your idea immediately!!!
People who have cataracts or legally blind or have reading disabilities or English is a second language for them.. the list of people your invention will help is endless!! :D
Like I stated get your idea copy written immediately. Then if you want to test the product, I suggest that you open a little eBay store AND list your product with Google (business solutions page) and with Amazon in their online auction site. Try those to test the waters for your product and see what comes up.
Good luck. The world needs far thinking peeps like you.
::huggies good peep::

It's probable to pay a lot of time and income searching for methods to show your children how to see and enhance their examining skills. Is hard to instruct a small child how to see, and also alluring them to read is challenging in itself. However it does not have to be like that when you got the help of this system https://tr.im/9v8Oy , Children Learning Reading program.
With Children Learning Reading you will teach your son or daughter how to split up sounds and break words into phonemes, an important point whenever your child is simply understanding how to spell.
The examining program from Children Learning Reading program makes it simple for kids to read rapidly and effectively, from easy phrases to phrases till they learn to read stories.

I think that sounds like a wonderful product. The only thing I could find was the website below, which will give you places to start to find a demand for your product. Good luck!

i think that is an excellent idea. a few years ago i worked for a non-profit agency that serviced adults with various levels of mr/dd. i worked with 4 gentlemen in their home and we had flashcards with pictures of different grocery items on them so we could compile a list with everyone's input. this helped with grocery shopping as well. honestly i do not know who you would contact. perhaps the county board of mr/dd or workshops that employ adults who are mr/dd or disabled. also think about getting your material copyrighted.

good luck

I'm certain many people would find such a book useful. There are websites/forums where people discuss issues in caring for challenged individuals, I would ask around there.
