DEFINITELY NO!!!!
Portugal is a country, not a province or part of Spain.
Many people (including perhaps your teacher) STILL thinks Portugal is part of Spain.

In Portugal they speak Portuguese!!!

Some people never learn....

Sorry, for letting out all my frustration.I can't stand when people confuses Portugal with Spain (nostros hermanos)

PS- What Oscar said about the national language is hurdu is completely wrong!!! Where did he get that from??? The national and only language of Portugal is Portuguese.FULL STOP!

~I doubt if a teacher to you Portugal is a Spanish speaking country. If so, make sure you don't take classes from the moron. Although many Portugese probably do speak Spanish, and likely other of the Romance languages, the national language is Hurdu.

No. In Portugal they speak Portugese, which is
close to, but not the same thing as Spanish.

No. Poruguese is a Romance language like French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian and Romanish (spoken in Switzerland). The country Portugal was formed after a split between two royal factions. Portugal was settled by the Sueves, unlike Spain, which was settled by the Visigoths, Moors and others.

My Grandparents were immigrants from Portugal, and until the day she died my Grandmother only spoke her native tongue; Portuguese. When I was a kid I didn't like visiting Vovo (which is Portuguese for grandmother, I used to think that was her first name or something), because I couldn't understand a thing that she said, of course my dad could speak Portuguese.

Portuguese is NOT Spanish, but like Italian they are considered Romance Languages, with a common root in the Latin of Rome. In fact if you speak ancient Latin in Italy you can almost be understood.

Portuguese and Spanish are in the same school of languages; the Romance Languages, meaning they have a common root language; in this case they are similar to the Latin from Rome.

One of your teachers is not too bright.
They speak portuguese in Portugal. Brazil speaks Portuguese and they are considered part of LATIN AMERICA. I guess Portugal could be said Latin by association but it's not spanish speaking just because it's close to Spain. It'd be like saying French people are Italian speakers just because they're close.

The term Latino is really only aimed at those in Latin America. European Spaniards are known as Castillian or Catalan (depending on the region) and as you stated it is MOSTLY the romance languages that derive more directly from Latin. Latinos are from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries from the American continent and are known as such because they take the language of those that conquered their countries when the Europeans were plundering the 'new world' and expanding their empires.
