Here's the full question:
If you wanted to study detailed features of a volcano on the island of Hawaii, would you use a map with a scale of 1:150 or 1:150,000? Why?

You would use 1:150. This scale would be appropriate for detailed study of small features (up to about 30 metres across) of a volcano. A feature of 30 metres would be 20cm on the map.

In a 1:150,000 scale map, each mm on your map = 150,000 mm on the volcano, or 150 meters. You cant cram 150 meters of info into 1mm.

1/150 would make Kiluea about 500 feet wide and 1/150,000 would make it a dot. Best go between somewhere.
