1) they like the adventure of it
2) they might get money, or a scholarship for college
3) they like representing the US

Either they feel a strong connection to the values this Country was founded upon..
or
they realize that if they join the Military they will be trained in a career, retire in 20 years with a pension and health care for life, and travel to exotic places.
What other job do you where you start at 18 and retire at 38?

The people I know who became soldiers did so to learn to become a better disciplined person and to help protect our nation.

Reasons vary, one is signifigant. What other career allows you to legally kill people, blow **** up and drive big destructive machines. In my own case, where else could I fly the hottest ride in the world, and blow **** up?
There are also educational and career opportunities that may not exist for the enlisties in civilian life. Non americans acquire citizenship through service. Some people need a lot of structure in their life, the military provides it. Lastly, some people actually beleive in honor and duty.

Well because they want to serve their country and protect your butt. FYI my brother is a soldier (marine) and went to iraq twice got injured the second time thank god he survived well just thought you should know
