An instant messenger is a program that allows you to sent text based messages to other messenger users. It is free to use and does not involve your cell phone. There is a function that allows you to send text to phones, though you have to pay for that service.

instant messaging is a program that basically allows you to talk with friends using messages sent quickly through your computer to theres. its a lot like email as it is electronic and sends messages but these message are sent a lot quicker and people tend to type shorter things, as if you were having a conversation, not like an email where you write a whole lot more. programs for your computer such as:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/
and
http://www.aim.com/
and one from mircrosoft, but i couldn't find the link provide free instant messenging software.
you can also get those for your phone but those cost a certain amount a month.

instant messenger is like a text message system. it's mostly used on the computer and it's free...there are many types: yahoo, msn, aim. you can get the yahoo one by going to messenger.yahoo.com. I don't know if it cost something for it to be on the phone, but i heard from someone that you can get aol aim on your phone with your phone package. not sure, you have to ask you phone company.

It allows instant text messages between users. Many of the major internet companies have it, AOL, Yahoo, MSN, etc.

If its on your cell, I would check with whatever company provides you with service.
