I would go the the HELP section of Internet Explorer and pick ABOUT. You should be using Version 6 with SP1. If not, then visit http://www.microsoft.com and get to from the Download section. But don't get the Version 7 BETA. Download only mature products.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs. Internet Explorer is suspecible to SpyWare.

In the Internet Options (under the Tools menu) use the DELETE FILES and DELETE COOKIES button regularly to get rid of the junk that builds up. When you are using a Library computer (or other public computer) be sure to go to the CONNECTION section and use the CLEAR FORMS and CLEAR PASSWORDS button when you are done using it to check your email.

ActiveX is especially vulnerable to attack. I recommend that you get a browser that is NOT as suspectible. Visit http://www.mozilla.com and get the Free FireFox browser. Use FireFox for most of your general surfing and searching. Use Internet Explorer only for trusted websites.

Yes, use Microsoft Internet Explorer when you must. It is faster and most websites are designed to view properly with IE. (a necessary evil).

Take a look at Extremetech.com article:

"Which New Browser Is Best: Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, or Opera 9?" -- written by Michael Muchmore http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1990850,00.asp)

It is a great article which reviews the pro's and con's of three of the most popular web browsers for Windows.
