I have gotten a used 50 gallon tank from a friend. When i was cleaning it i noticed some kind of residue or build up (maybe calcium?) on the tank that will not come off with soap and water...any suggestions on how to get this off?

I have not began to use the tank yet. I cleaned it with soap and water because it was stored in a garage before i got it and it was quite dirty. I rinsed it out very well. THen I plan to put water in it tomorrow and use this stuff call "start right" and wait 24 hours before adding fish. Will the soap still hurt the fish if I havent put any in yet???

i just did this to my 10 gal tank, go to a car supply store, like auto zone, and get a paint scraper, works really well, only scrape down, and not up, so its put the scraper to the glass, apply some pressure, and push down, remove from the glass surface and repeat, when youre doing this, make sure that the scraper is under some water, that vinigar doesnt work fast enough

The stuff on the tank might be algae. If it is brown or black, it's algae. When you get some fish, make sure you get an algae eater. They clean the sides of the tank where the algae grows. If the stuff isn't brown or black, I have no clue what it is. Just make sure before you put the fish in the tank you rinse the soap out really good. I don't know if it will kill the fish or not.

id start out by getting some steel wool and some water and a lil old fashion elbow grease and if that dont work get yourself some clr or something and just remember to rinse the tank real well id even use a lil vinager to rinse the tank with then id fill it up and let it sit for 24 hours fully set up before id start adding fish then id prolly get a few gold fish to get the nitrogen cycle started and keep them for a month or so doing frequent water changes then get rid of the goldfish and put what ever kind you want in i would suggest you not go to a place like walmart due to desieses go with a larger pet store

All you can use is a Multipurpose Scrub Sponge. No soap or anything it can kill the fish. What you can get off leave it alone.

Nothing will really make it go away. Maybe try a really good acid, thats the only thing I can think off, but even that I doubt it.
