I just finished writing the same essay. In our society, we have been forced to give up certain freedoms in exchange for safety. Wiretapping has been controversial since many Americans feel it invades their privacy. In addition, the Patriot Act challenges laws protected under the 4th amendment. We also have to determine if war is the best way to conquer terrorists and persevere, and if we are willing to sacrifice troops and a strain on the economy for war. Benjamin Franklin's quote, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

The two most important things that are challenging our freedom today are 1. The spread of fascist thinking in this country - that is the belief that if someone does not live and think as you, they should and can be punished. This thinking is a disease for democracy and it is spreading. 2. The philosophy and behavior of the Bush Administration. "If you are not with us, you are against us" is a statement that is not only in agreement with #1 above, but should send a chill up the spine of anyone who believes in freedom anywhere in the world, but especially here in the U.S.

I used to love this country enough that I devoted many yeays of my life to service in the U>S>Marine Corps, however, now I see a country of want to be Americans, our politiians only care about themselves and the power they get from public office, our police have turned into a modern gestapo and we only get the constitutional rights that our government decides that we can have;why is it like this, because we've lost the guts to challenge our government and conduct ourselves like real americans,so keep it up America and mabe when you get laid off from your job you can thank some illegial immigrant..when will we wake;I'm ashamed to admit that I risked my life in the Marines for a bunch of gutless wimps

Mainly government itself when it offers extra ways to "help" the people. It's the way they take more and more power for themselves and it's never a crime because so many people are willing to vote away their rights to make their lives easier, allowing their elected officials to make their choices for them.

Example: Julius Caesar never took any power. It was all given to him and he happily accepted it. He was also the motivation behind Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars.

People victimize themselves by not understand our system of government and taking an active part in it. When we let our politicians run everything, they write laws to suit themselves. We the people means we run the government by voting, writing representatives and voicing our opinions.
