My 3 y/o son fell down the steps this evening (about 20 minutes after the dr office closed) and hit his nose on a step. It swelled up instantly. There was a little blood mixed in clear snot. He cried for a very short time. I had my father who has some medic type training look at it. He doesn't feel that it is broken. It is still swollen more than 3 hours later. It is still red and starting to show signs of bruising. I guess what I am wanting to know is what I can expect tonight until I can get him to the doctor in the morning. I would like advice from anyone who knows from medical training or personal experience. Thanks, P~

My best advice would be to keep ice on it to keep swelling to a minimum and give him tylenol for any pain. Keep an eye on it until morning and then decide if he needs to see a dr. There is nothing that the dr will do except tell you to put ice on it and take tylenol--even it it is broken. If no obvious deformity is present, the bleeding has stopped, there isn't much pain and bruising is not too bad you may be able to skip the dr all together. Nasal x-rays are not very easy for a patient this age and the dr usually does not change treatment even if it is broken. Use your best judgement--you know your son better than anyone.

I am not a medical person, but I do know to keep an ice pack on it for 20 mins. or so and off 20 mins. or so to keep the swelling down. Do not put ice directly on the nose.. use a towel so the ice is not directly on the skin. By keeping the swelling down it keeps the pain down. It may help to keep his head elevated if he feels throbing when laying all the way down.

It might very well be broken. My daughter broke her nose at about 10 or 11, and it swelled, bruised, and she got black eyes. I took her to her regular doctor who sent her to an ENT. When all was said and done, it was lined up right and nothing else was necessary. Give max amounts of Tylenol (for weight/age) until you can go to doctor. I wouldn't go to the emergency room. If your insurance company has 24-hour nurses, you could call, but they won't really do anything for you except reassure you that he will be fine.

make a fun game out of the applying the makeshift ice pack
