Should it point towards the center of the block or towards the outsideof the block when looking at # 1 cylinder from upside down and the connecting rod bolted on the crank shaft?

Away from the cam, so that would be towards the ground or oil pan.

I have done this for a long time the bearing lock grove goes towards the the exhaust side. But I have got an engine and they are all mixed up and is a problem

Pretty sure the lock tangs go toward the outside of the block, away from camshaft. The '60s pontiacs I build are the opposite, their lock tangs go toward the cam.

I dont know about wheter it should be pointed towards the intake or exhaust...but it goes to the outside towards the main bearing corresponding to that cylinder...if it's pointed towards the other connecting rod it will lock.

Intake...Other clues? the piston pin offset. the oil hole in the rod. Tangs stop the rotation of the bearing shell. Counter to the turning direction of the engine.

On a 305, the tangs are on the outside while the piston mark is pointed forward.

Tangs only locate the bearing left and right ways. They do nothing to stop spin in the journal. The crush of the bearing does that.

I am installing 350 rods to crank there is a bevel & flat side on rod and rod caps. Do the flat side go against crank or does it matter
