Because I'm a veteran, my sons are veterans, my dad, my grandfather, my greatgrandfather.....etc.

And because of the respect that I have for our fighting men and women from the past (and present) who gave their lives for us.

U.P.

My kids get Veteran's day off. But then again, there are 2 military bases in town. At the other post, they got a 4 day weekend for Veteran's day. Those were DOD schools. Mine also get President's day - which is unusual I think - cause I remember they used to go to school for President's day but not MLK day.

Respect, Respect, Respect for the men and women who gave all and for the men and women that gave so much.

It is a great way to salute these people.

I am impressed that WalMart has not gotten ahold if it yet like thay have with all other holidays and ran them in the ground and changed the meaning of the day. Sooner or later they will. Just a matter of time when it is for gift giving and nothing more.

Personally, very important. My dad, granddads for many generations have fought in many wars. They fight for our country, other countries and us. They need a day to remember them in what they have done and have protected. Especially when so many people take them for granted and can't go and do what they have done. Our soldiers are heroes just like any man in the service: fire, police, EMT, and so on. That is what needs to be remembered. They do it for you and I.

Here's to all you facists always ready to risk the life of healthy young men and women who have every right to continue having their whole lives in front of them.

"If you get killed fighting for your native land you've bought a pig in a poke. You've paid for something you'll never collect."

"No sir anybody who went out and got into the front line trenches to fight for liberty was a goddamn fool and the guy who got him there was a liar."

"Please all you guys who want to fight to preserve honor let us know what the hell honor is. Is it American honor for the whole world we're fighting for? Maybe the world doesn't like it. Maybe the South Sea Islanders like their honor better."

All the guys who went out and died to make the world safe for democracy to make the world safe for words without meaning how did they feel about it just before they died? How did they feel about it as they watched their blood pump out into the mud? How did they feel when the gas hit their lungs and began eating them all away? [....] If the thing they were fighting for was important enough to die for then it was also important enough for them to be thinking about it in the last minutes of their lives. That stood to reason. [...] So did all those kids die thinking of democracy and freedom and liberty and honor and the safety of the home and the stars and stripes forever?
You're goddamn right they didn't.
They died crying in their minds like little babies. They forgot the thing they were figting for the things they were dying for. They thought about things a man can understand. They died yearning fr the face of a friend. They died whimpering for the voice of a mother a father a wife a child. Thet died with their hearts sick for one more look at the place where they were born please god just one more look. They died moaning and sighing for life. They knew what was important. They knew that life was everything and they died with screams and sobs. They died with only one thought in their minds and that was I want to live I want to live I want to live."

It reminds me of the times I was in combat, those that did not come back alive, the sacrifices it takes to have such a great nation, and reminds me how lucky I am to live in it, and have served.
