Tone, mood, how did it make you feel? How did you react to the characters and the scenarios they were involved in? The essay should be all about how you felt reading it, it's your opinion, there can be no wrong answer. depends on the short story. is the author lecturing? bitter? moralizing? biased in any way? favor a character because of his/her beliefs or actions? not like another for the same reason?
select the tone of the author and write. do you agree? is it merited? does the author have a good reason (time when the author lived and what is being criticized or lauded, etc.)?

make your intro with a strong thesis, three paragraphs for the body. and finally a good conclusion that wraps up the paper.
