The problem with surviving a nuclear attack is radioactive fallout. Nothing can be touched. If you do not die from the initial poisoning, the small amounts of radioactive fallout that you will be exposed to later will play games with your DNA. This will cause your children to be severely deformed. Those successfully procreate despite the DNA troubles may have to fight rally nasty bouts of cancer without any hospitals to treat them.
It looks like no one wins in a nuclear holocaust.

depending on which kinds of bombs are used and how many, 6 months may not be long enough, Some bombs contain devices that have a half life of more than 200 years, so the earth would not be habitable for centuries, possibly 1000 years. Chernobyl is still not safe ti live in after more than 20 years.

nukes are too messy; and who wants to eat radioactive veggies therafter?

let's just genetically create a disease that strikes 90 percent of people sterile. That will trim the human herd, and make life valuable for once.
