I wouldn't ask a pet shop, they might have a bit of knowledge about hamsters, but not rats. A lot of pet shops cant even sex their animals properly let alone house them or feed them properly. Anyway back to the question... Jicama is a legume so must not be fed raw to rats as it can cause the pancreas to swell. Legumes are fine for hamsters, but I would still cook it for them to make it more appealing and digestable. I would give them a tiny bit to start with, the same as you would to introduce any new veg. For the hamsters I would say a piece about a quarter of a teaspoon each and for the rats about half a teaspoon each. You don't want to give too much at once in case they get an upset stomach from it. I would also only give it as a rare treat, maybe once a month or so because of the high sugar content which will get higher the longer you leave the jicama in the fridge. Plus too much too often will definitely give your hamsters the runs which is not a good thing.

I also want to say before I forget, good for you for doing research before giving it to them. Your pets are lucky to have such a caring owner. I just hope that they like it after all this!
