It is a theory but they think it was formed this way because of the light that radiates from the stars. it seems the stars are drifiting farther and farther apart and that helps support the theory that there was once a big bang that put the galaxies in motion away from each other. They also have a theory that soon the galaxies will stop moving away and begin moving back together.

They are guessing, but they have no proof that evolution is real.
Evolution is voodoo science. Life can't evolve from non-life, and science can't explain how the very first life form came into existence.
