if i have my house set at 70 degrees and my wife wants it at 72. how much will that incress my usage. i pay $1.60 lb for propain. about a 10 year old furnance.

I don't know the exact amount it will cost you, but a good guess is: more than you'd want to pay. Other people who answered have good ideas about insulation and so on...I'd say...tell your wife to put on a heavy sweater! We live in the west and our power company has been "blue chip" for its stockholders for 20 years, and few people here keeps their houses as warm even as 70. So bundle up and stay hardy!

It's not quite a cut and dry as that, since it depends on the size of the house, the ambient temperature outside, how well insulated your house is, etc. But in general increasing two degrees in that range can change the heating cost by 10%.

Service your furnace before the start of the heavy use season, wrap your hot-water heater in a thermal blanket and wrap hot water pipes as well. All these things will help reduce your costs. Be sure to use weather-stripping and replace old gaskets around doors and windows.

Also, can different areas of your home be heated to different temps? Like keeping the living room and kitchen higher and the bedrooms cooler. No sense heating the whole house more if your wife is mostly just using one or two rooms.

i believe that you will have to know the square footage of the area in question to heat
