If you started dating someone and later when politics comes up that they're a staunchly proud liberal but you're a 100% conservative (and vice-versa) would you end the relationship even though everything else between you is great?

I personally would, but plenty of relationships work despite differences in politlcal ideology. I think its a question of priority - if your politics are extremely important to you, you won't want to date anyone who would challenge them.

Sure. Look at James Carville and Mary Matlin or Arnold Schwarznegger and Maria Schriver.

Absolute opposite political views. Great marriages. American political rhetoric is nutty. Break down any inflammatory political ad and you see that it is full of lies or half truths at best. Take away the manipulation and different views in the discussion would illuminate strengths and weaknesses in each argument.

I've been married for over 22 years and I have learned that between 2 people, it is the things you have in common that make you comfortable but it is the ways that you are different that make things work best. One caveat. This is true as long as you respect one another.

I think you'll find 2 perspectives buying a house or car, or raising kids, or deciding where to vacation, or even deciding what movie to see usually makes things more interesting.

James Carville is a staunch liberal who was very instrumental in Bill Clinton's Campaign and was the liberal on CNN's crossfire. He is married to a woman named Mary Matalin who is a loyal Republican and has been heavily involved in the presidency of both G.W. Bush and his father. It's a very interesting, and oddly enough very strong marriage that has lasted for years.

As long as he wasn't a nut, which I think would have come out in other ways before I found out his political beliefs, I don't think there would be a problem. It depends on the person, not on the politics.

If everything else is great, it's all good with me. Politics are not a big deal to me. Of course, I am lucky to live in a country where I feel safe most of the time.

Yes and I did , that's the only thing we don't see eye to eye on , we get along fine . We don't talk politics and there is no fighting .
He's more then his politics
We respect each others opinions and points of view .

No, I don't think I could.
I think the only reason James Carville and Mary Matalin can make it work is that they are both burned out on politics by the time they get home, and just don't discuss it.

No, unless your both politicians. I see no reason why your relationship won't work out. Just keep it simple, agree to disagree. It makes a for a fun relationship, never a low moment on conversations. Just don't take it to bed with you. And you'll be OK.

Sure, my husband's political beliefs and mine are completely opposite. Makes things a bit interesting and keeps the conversations going.
