Beta fish are inexpensive and fairly low maintenance, They dont actually need a lot of room to survive, but really more water is better. You can keep them in pretty much anything as long as it doesnt have an airtight lid and isnt tall and narrow... the larger the surface area of the water the better for oxygen.

You can get a 1 gallon tank at walmart for 12 to 20 dollars with an airpump, an undergravel filter, etc. the beta fish usually costs around 4 dollars. you shouold only keep one beta fish in a tank, but thats okay because they are very pretty to look at.

They dont need nearly as frequent water changes as other fish... but its sooooo much easier if you just dip out 30% of the water once or twice a week and replace it... with a small tank like betas usuall have its quick and easy. they can also survive in very dirty conditions, but its kind of cruel to make them live that way.

they sell a food just for betas at walmart also...

i woudlnt reccomend keeping a beta with any other fish.

if you get 3 or 4 fish you should have at least a 5 to 10 gallon tank... but youll need to work to take care of it.

Contrary to popular beleif goldfish need more water, they say 10 gallons each to live a long healthy life... its realy depressing that people think its common that they only live a week.... if they dont last very long... something went wrong... they can live to be 20 years old. they are dirty fish, need lots of oxygen, and will coninue to get bigger in a bigger tank... ive heard if you keep them in a smaller tank together they secrete hormones that keeps them smaller, but their organs will continue to grow and eventually they will almost litteraly burst... my husband said hes seen it happen several times when he and his friends used to try to keep fish...

well, depending on the size of your tank and the breed of fish limits how many you could or should get. some fish are a group fish and need at least three to accompany them. I have a 30 gallon tank that I bought at Walmart, and started with basic garden variety goldfish from Walmart. That is the best way to balance th pH levels in your tank. You will probably go thru a few gold fish and when they stop dieing, then you can move on to other breeds. I still have a Walmart gold fish and it is about 6inches long now.( he started out only about a inch). I also have a few other fish in the tank, about 8 total. I had more, but they have slowly died. Sharks are really cool. but for low maintenance, goldfish, nothing too exotic, they require a bit more time and effort. course, I have two betta also, and they aren't that hard to take care of either. Feed them once in the am and at night. change the water about once a week or a little more.

To sox first of all, my fish are from pets at home - 11 years old lol. Second of all, i would either recommend you give away your cold water fish, maybe to a friend so you can still see them and then buy a heater, and keep tropical fish, then you can buy a lot of small colourful fish (making sure not to over stock your tank) OR buy some more of your type of fish, which i'm guessing are fan tails if you have orfs, so maybe a red capped oranda, and some more like that. Don't over stock it and try not to mix a normal bodied goldfish with a fancy goldfish - competition for food! GL, hope i helped you in any way. P.S List your tank size, it will help others answer. :)

Have you thought about Goldfish? They're enjoyable & low maintenence. My betta fish just die because I couldn't keep the tank temperature around 76 - 78 degrees. Goldfish are more durable & come in a few exciting colors.

I have betta fish, so i reccomend them.
if you get them, make sure you don't put them in the same tank, or at least have a divider in one tank. they will kill eachother if you put them in one tank. Low maintinence. Make sure you clean out their tank once in a while, like every month.

So many to choose from. Go to a pet shop-talk there and decide. You didn't tell us how big is your tank and what you have. that would help. And do you want breeding fish or not.

The person below me has a good suggestion. They are colorful and breed easily

Look up sites like http://www.fishprofiles.com and research the fish you might be interested in to see if their max size and temperament would be ok for the size tank you will get and tank mates.

Betta fish are very easy and hardy. But you can have only one to a tank.. You can try mollies.. or zebra danios ( they are very hardy )
